Innovate your micro business with IT

In the digital era we live in, and after working with several micro businesses, it became obvious that IT isn’t always seen as an important focus. So why when you have a micro business is IT one of the most important assets you can build to stand out from your competitors? The fundamentals of IT and the technology available isn’t simply to give you Microsoft Word and a PC anymore, yes they are important, but no where near as important as a ruthlessly efficient and well organised company. Imagine if I gave you a dictionary, it’s not in alphabetical order and I asked you to find one specific word, now how long would it take you? Unfortunately for many that is how their customers appear, which means they spend less time adding value and more time completing tasks that add no value or take value away.

Empowering your business to create a more meaningful connection with it’s customers is a must in todays world.

So how does IT help in this area? Surely it’s just another thing to manage and keep up to date? Surely it costs a lot and doesn’t add business value? But that’s where we need to depart from the traditional views on IT and refresh our perspective for the era we are now living in. IT is now so much more than just a support function, it’s your business enabler. If deployed properly it takes your customer journey, digitalises it and automates all of the needless human intervention, not to take people away from the customer, but to give people more time to spend on what the customer actually needs and wants.

After you’ve completely mapped out a customer journey, then you know what you’re doing. There’s so much more to do from this point on, but the lesson is, don’t expect technology to solve all your problems. First you have to clearly define what you want to achieve, then technology can work wonders for you. A CRM (Customer Relationship Management) platform like Salesforce for example can capture everything about your customers and empower you to easily see more and better understand your customer. A powerful marketing automation tool can personalise your marketing efforts and generate more leads that will be more likely to convert to a sale. And a automatic invoicing tool can make sure you never get your books mixed up and you know how well you’re doing. But until you know what you want to achieve, the technology won’t be able to act efficiently.

With a small business you have the ability to enable your business to grow through the digital world we live in, and it doesn’t have to be complicated. A common misconception in a smaller business is the importance of IT, and how it can make you stand out from your competitors. After all, we live in a world where you can get same day delivery from your mobile phone and we can stream music on the go. We have a unconscious expectation of all businesses now and that is being set by the major players, but as a small business you can get there too, but only if you realise the potential of digital innovation.
